Thibault Brunet @ Musée de l’Armée, Paris - FR
“In connection with the contemporary themes of the exhibition, visual artist Thibault Brunet proposes a scientific mission conducted inside the video game Minecraft. In this strangely familiar world, the artist invites civilian and military scientists to explore an environment where days are programmed to last 24 minutes. Their study protocols for this new world — which seems to belong to no one while still being inhabited — offer the public an unprecedented perspective on the phenomenon of exploration, past and future.
A video installation specially developed by the artist is presented at the end of the exhibition, alongside a sculpture also created by Thibault Brunet. This sculpture is a ‘real portion of the world’ explored in Minecraft. It evokes a geological and sedimentary relief composed of layered strata. The work situates itself within the legacy of scientific practices such as cartography and geography, while also recalling, in its construction, the tradition of the plan-relief models produced from 1668 onwards for Louis XIV by Louvois, Minister of War. These two experiences — virtual and physical — invite the public to reflect on the present and future challenges of exploration, through both a concrete and philosophical approach. It questions the enduring human need to circumscribe and represent the world in the face of its vastness, which always escapes the capacities of our tools of capture.”Curated by Lieutenant-colonel Philippe Guyot, Lucie Moriceau-Castagner, Lucile Paraponaris, Antoine Tromski (assisted by Pamina Weité).15.04 - 10.08.2026
