Simon Roberts @ Erfurt Art Museum, Erfurt - DE

Simon Roberts is part of the show Dem Himmel is so nah at the Erfurt Art Museum.

The significance of depictions of clouds in the visual arts ranges from the religious symbolism of the Middle Ages, through the sublime, atmospheric landscapes of Romanticism, to the scientifically informed perspectives of Realism. In the age of climate change, clouds are directly linked to man-made environmental destruction and take on a political dimension. This, too, has long been a theme in art, as works in this exhibition demonstrate. Contemporary art also offers a poetic and sensual approach to the subject.

The exhibition brings together works spanning over 500 years and features 47 international artists – from Albrecht Dürer, through Andreas Achenbach and Erich Heckel, to Gerhard Richter and Yoko Ono. Through their art, they all make one thing clear: our relationship with the sky and all its phenomena is always imbued with profound emotional and existential significance.
